| Here is some information collected on Ma Huang, in the continuing analyzation of the safety of this product. Several decades ago I asked the doctor in charge of the local, major trauma center here. He said the only cases of difficulties with herbs they see in the ER involve Ma Huang. As a recovering drug addict & alcoholic, I can answer the question. It's easy. Ma Huang, Ephedra, Ephedrine (same thing) has an effect on humans; humans like the effect. Addicts & alkies overdo anything & everything that has a good effect. Thus, the problem is in the humans, not in the herb. End of subject. |
| Ma Huang, also know as: Chinese ephedra, ma huang extract, ephedra, Ephedra sinica, ephedra extract, ephedra herb powder, or epitonin, all of which indicate a source of ephedrine. |

| Ephedra has been used medicinally for thousands of years by
ancient and modern day societies as a treatment for various lung and
breathing conditions. However, recently Ephedra has received a lot of bad
press for its recently discovered side effects and products containing
ephedra have been banned in the United States. How Ephedra Works The main chemical compound in Ephedra (or Ma Huang, as it is commonly known by many) is ephedrine. Ephedrine is a potent chemical that works by stimulating the nervous system, dilating bronchial tubes, elevating blood pressure, and increasing heart rate. The amount of ephedrine that ephedra contains varies greatly, accounting for anywhere from 30 to 90% of all alkaloid ingredients in any given sample. This extreme variability of ephedrine dosage can cause many problems and relatively severe side effects. Side Effects and Precautions Ephedra gained its primary fame as a weight loss drug. It is not, however, considered by many healthcare professionals and medical researchers as a safe herb to help people loose weight. In most cases, the doses used for weight loss are far beyond the 150 mg per 24 hours safety limit that has been established. It is now believed that higher doses cause many amphetamine-like side effects, including dry mouth to more severe problems including heart failure. Additionally, too high of ephedra levels in the system may cause severe problems including anxiety, headaches, restlessness, high blood pressure, and even insomnia. Ephedra is considered an amphetamine; like other amphetamines, it is addictive. When individuals stop using ephedra after prolonged use, they may experience withdrawal symptoms including cold sweats, mood swings, and heart palpitations. When used to lose weight, a common response to its removal from the system is binge eating. As a result, all the weight previously lost is almost immediately gained back. Most notable is Ephedra's potentially dangerous effect of overstimulating the central nervous system, raising blood pressure, and increasing heart rate. Moreover, ephedra has been used in making illegal street drugs such as methamphetamine. Ephedra has been the center of major controversy between the herb industry and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since the 1990s. Finally, strong evidence indicates that Ephedra may react badly with a variety of medical conditions including with high blood pressure, heart problems, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes. Currently, Ephedra is banned in the United States. Supporting Literature Ang-Lee MK, Moss J, Yuan C-S. Herbal medicines and perioperative care [review]. JAMA. 2001;286(2):208-216. Blumenthal M, ed. | April 2006 UPDATE to previous article: The ban is being withdrawn & Ma Huang is becoming available. |

| Ephedra Ban Lifted as of April 14th, 2005 By MARK THIESSEN, Associated Press Writer SALT LAKE CITY - A federal judge Thursday struck down the FDA ban on ephedra, the once-popular weight-loss aid that was yanked from the market after it was linked to dozens of deaths. The judge ruled in favor of a Utah company that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's ban. Utah-based Nutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that ephedra "has been safely consumed" for hundreds of years. Supplements that included ephedra have been widely used for weight loss and bodybuilding, but have linked to 155 deaths, including that of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler. The FDA ordered the substance off the market in April 2004. Judge Tena Campbell's ruling sends the matter back to the FDA "for further rulemaking consistent with the court's opinion" and keeps the agency from enforcement action against the companies. FDA officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Company president Bruce Hough said the decision is about "protecting the public's access to safe and effective dietary supplements." Ephedra products will not be sold to California, Illinois or New York state. |
| Side Comment: The only 'non-standard' FDA category that I'm personally aware of is for the non-dairy, powdered creamer (for coffee), a product that has been on the market for as long as I can remember. It is categorized as 'grass'; generally regarded as safe. A scientific person told me the ingredients are basically ground glass. Hmm, interesting category. |

| Ephedra is one of the most dangerous of the dietary
supplements. Over 800 injuries have been reported by users and doctors to the FDA and various state medical bodies, including more than 50 deaths. Most of these cases involve the heart attacks or high blood pressure leading to bleeding in the brain or stroke. Recent studies show that many people are seriously injured by the use of ephedrine. They are often unaware that ephedrine suppliers are can make wide ranging health claims about the product that have no scientific basis. Nor is there any mention of the potential for dangerous side effects. Because the industry was lobbied to pass a law deregulating these products in l994, the FDA has been unable to regulate these products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FDA statement on street drugs containing botanical ephedrine FDA is warning consumers not to purchase or consume ephedrine-containing dietary supplements with labels that often portray the products as apparent alternatives to illegal street drugs such as "ecstasy." Possible adverse effects of ephedrine range from clinically significant effects such as heart attack, stroke, seizures, psychosis, and death, to clinically less significant effects that may indicate the potential for more serious effects (for example, dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal distress, irregular heartbeat, and heart palpitations). Ingredient panels on these products may list ma huang, Chinese ephedra, ma huang extract, ephedra, Ephedra sinica, ephedra extract, ephedra herb powder, or epitonin, all of which indicate a source of ephedrine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original FDA statement on Ephedrine Regulation The Food and Drug Administration proposed to reduce risks associated with dietary supplement products containing ephedrine alkaloids by limiting the amount of ephedrine alkaloids in products and requiring labeling and marketing measures that give adequate warning and information to consumers. Ephedrine alkaloids are amphetamine-like compounds with potentially powerful stimulant effects on the nervous system and heart. Hundreds of consumer illnesses and injuries associated with the use of these products have been reported. The proposal would not ban dietary supplements that contain ephedrine alkaloids. "Consumers should be aware that just because a product is labeled 'natural' or from an herbal source it is not guaranteed to be safe," said Dr. Michael Friedman, Deputy Commissioner of Food and Drugs. "The effects of ephedrine alkaloids are potentially powerful ones. We urge people to talk to their doctors before using dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids, and to always use them with caution." Because ephedrine alkaloids are heart and nervous system stimulants, certain individuals including those with hypertension, heart conditions and neurologic disorders, should avoid their use. Pregnant women, too, should avoid the use of dietary supplements with ephedrine alkaloids. The proposal would prohibit the marketing of dietary supplements containing 8 milligrams or more of ephedrine alkaloids per serving. Labeling that recommends or suggests conditions of use that would result in an intake of 8 mg or more in a 6-hour period or a total daily intake of 24 mg or more also would not be allowed. In addition, the proposal would require label statements instructing consumers not to use the product for more than 7 days, and would not allow label claims for uses for which long-term intake would be necessary to achieve the purported effect. These safety measures are based on the fact that long-term intake of ephedrine alkaloids increases the likelihood of serious adverse events. Another measure in the proposal would apply to products with claims that encourage short-term excessive intake to enhance the claimed effect, such as energy enhancement. Such products would be required to bear a labeling statement that "Taking more than the recommended serving may result in heart attack, stroke, seizure or death." The proposal also would prohibit the use of other stimulant ingredients such as botanical sources of caffeine with ephedrine alkaloids because the combination increases the stimulant effects of ephedrine alkaloids and the chance of consumer injury. Dietary supplement products containing ephedrine alkaloids are currently sold for a variety of purposes including weight loss, increased energy and body building. Since 1994, the agency has received and investigated more than 800 reports of adverse events associated with the use of these products. Reported adverse events range from episodes of high blood pressure, irregularities in heart rate, insomnia, nervousness, tremors and headaches, to seizures, heart attacks, strokes and death. Most events occurred in young to middle aged, otherwise healthy adults using the products for weight control and increased energy. Ephedrine alkaloids in dietary supplements are usually derived from one of several species of herbs of the genus Ephedra, sometimes called Ma huang, Chinese Ephedra and epitonin. Other botanical sources include Sida cordifolia. The proposed measures were developed based on the FDA's review of its adverse event reports, the scientific literature, and public comments reviewed by the agency, including comments generated by an October 1995 advisory working group public meeting and an August 1996 public meeting of the FDA's Food Advisory Committee. These experts suggested a number of steps the agency might take to reduce injuries associated with use of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids. |
| My Opinion: |
| Ephedra (also known as Ma huang, Chinese Ephedra and
epitonin) is the worlds oldest medicine. The Chinese discovered ephedra more
than 5000 years ago. Research has shown that ephedra increases metabolism
and helps promote weight loss, relaxes the air passages in the lungs to help
treat asthma and cough, promotes perspiration to help a person recover from
a minor cold and helps promote urination to help relieve edema. Ephedra has been widely researched for its thermogenic (fat burning) properties. Research has show that ephedra helps promote the loss of fat while helping spare lean muscle tissue, a highly sought-after property that prescription diet medications still have not been able to reproduce. Herbal Phen-Fen, a popular herbal formulation used for dieting, is a combination of ephedra and St. Johns Wort. The ECA Stack (ephedra, caffeine, aspirin) has been used by bodybuilders to burn fat, and increase energy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Safety For more FDA information on ephedra, please google the ephedra & FDA. As ephedra is a stimulant and a thermogenic, it should NOT be used by people / in situations where these properties might be harmful. There are some common sense rules about using ephedra: Do not use ephedra if you have any medical problems as the use of a stimulant might overtax your system. Do not use ephedra if your activity / environment will prevent you from dissipating heat. Your body core temperature might exceed safe levels. And do not take more than the manufacturer's recommended amount. What this means is: If you have a heart condition, do not take ephedra. And if you plan to wear clothes to raise your body temperature, do not take ephedra. And do not think that playing baseball on a hot muggy day will counteract these two common sense conditions and make it okay to take ephedra. |
| My Opinion: |
| Here is the top 200 medicine list from 2002. If you go look up the side effects on all of these, Ma Huang will begin to sound much less dangerous. Not that not all of these meds are currently available; some have legal issues preventing their sale. |
